Did Someone Pee in Your Cornflakes?
I am curious about something. Can you tell the minute you wake up on any particular day that your day is going to stink? What clues you in? Is it a feeling? A thought? A particular attitude that entered your REM and piggy-backed into morning consciousness? Most people have to have their coffee spill or their mascara smear in order to start the day off with a bad attitude. But, what if by the time your eyes crack open and your brain fog begins to clear, you just know the day is going to go up in flames?
If this has ever happened to you, what do you do to prevent you from “going there”? Do you stop in your tracks and say a prayer? Do you stop, drop and roll into a downward dog and breathe your way through the nastiness? Do you yell at your partner as if it’s their fault someone peed in your cornflakes? How do you get your mind back on track before your short jaunt to the toilet?
Call it “being or not being a morning person”. Blame it on a bad night’s sleep. Say that it’s middle age hormones. Whatever excuse works for you, how long does it take you to feel nice again? After a morning hug from your kids? After the second cup of coffee? After a few morning smiles from your co-workers? By dinner? How do you get your head to align with your actions and behaviors?
Personally I tell myself to knock it off. I pull the gratitude card. I start moving and mentally planning my day so that the thoughts of self-pity, or blame, or anger, or whatever is evil on that day, go away. I know people who do devotions before their feet hit the floor and others who call a family member for a cheerful chat as soon as their gruff morning voice is audible. Adding rich and creamy half and half to their (pot of) coffee instead of fake creamer does the trick for some.
Whatever works to keep you from carrying a soggy cornflake morning from the bed to the world is worthy. Keep doing it! Adopt a mental morning routine that works for you. Ideally allow it involve your heart, soul and mind. Hug your pet. Meditate. Stretch or exercise. Snuggle. Do something that releases the “feel good” hormone, serotonin, and un-stink your day before it begins.
As for the cornflakes, maybe try a new breakfast food.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
